She noticed how no one ever went near him, even given the visit and interaction with the other three quarters of the Fantastic Four. “The Thing”, as he was referred to, spent most of his time hanging out near Hagrid’s shack. Apparently Hagrid was one of the only ones who did not shun him.
She found herself venturing out there one day, only to find him sitting there alone.
“If you’re looking for Hagrid, he’ll be back soon.” His voice was gravelly, with a tinge of disappointment and sadness.
“Alright,” she replied softly. “But I actually wanted…”
“To come see the freak?” he asked.
“Actually I was hoping to find out more about you, like your name?”
He looked surprised, but recovered pretty quickly. “I’m Ben. What about you?”
“I’m Hermione. I’m friends with Harry and Ron, though you may not know them. We’re all friends with Hagrid. Your friends seem nice.” She found herself at somewhat of a loss for topics because she really knew nothing about this Ben.
“They’re a good bunch,” Ben agreed. “It’s funny, for as large as I am, and despite the fact that Sue is the one who is gifted with invisibility, I feel as if I’m the invisible one here. Can’t say I like it, but it sure beats people yelling, screaming and running away every time I come around.”
“You’re only invisible because you choose to be. I’m sure that plenty of people here would give you a chance if you’d let them.”
“I doubt many would like you think. The wizarding world may be different from the rest of the world, but I am strange in either realm.”
“Everyone is strange in some way. It’s just more visible on some than others,” she replied, smiling softly. “I’ve got to go or I’ll be late for potions so I guess I’ll see you later.”
“I guess you will,” Ben replied softly, smiling back at the little girl.
